  • Board President—Current
  • Board member since 2016. In the last five years, the District has:
    • Expanded its mental health partnerships and resources
    • Forged a strong relationship with community colleges for dual enrollment classes
    • Received competitive grants which have increased career technical education courses
    • Increased STEM education opportunities
    • Reduced suspension and chronic absenteeism rates
  • Co-Founder of the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee. The Committee’s mission is to ensure the district serves all students and grows a professional and diverse workforce.
  • Co-Founder districtwide multicultural appreciation initiative.
  • Four Burbank elementary schools received the California Exemplary Arts Education Award in 2020.
  • Secured a buddy bench at Joaquin Miller Elementary where his son attends school.
Raising a Family and Giving Back to Burbank
Dr. Aghakhanian is a longtime Burbank resident and homeowner with over twenty years of experience in education, business, and public service. His professional and service efforts are focused on serving and strengthening our community.
As an immigrant, Armond developed a deep commitment to equity and diversity and giving back to his community.
Armond lives in Burbank with his wife, Dr. Gayane Gasamanyan, a local pharmacist and their son Arameh, a soon-to-be third-grader at Joaquin Miller Elementary School.
Community Service Volunteer
Prior to being elected to the BUSD, Armond has served as a volunteer on:
  • Burbank School Facilities Oversight Committee
  • Burbank Parks, Recreation & Community Services Board
  • Burbank Community Development Goals & Civic Pride Committee
  • Boys & Girls Club of Burbank
  • Greater East Valley Board of Directors
  •  YMCA and several other non-profits.
Armond is currently a member of the Kiwanis Club of Burbank.
Educator / Community College Teacher / Innovator
Armond currently teaches at both Glendale Community College and East Los Angeles Community College. He brings two decades of teaching to his profession including stints at Woodbury University, Marymount California University, the Salvation Army College, and several other educational institutions.
He is the Director of the East Los Angeles College (ELAC) Foundation where he co-founded ELAC’s Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation and Incubator. The Center is the only institution of its kind in East LA. It was created to accelerate the startup and growth-phase for enterprises owned by minorities, women, veterans, the formerly incarcerated, and members of the LGBT community.
Armond founded the Transforming Lives Campaign (TLC), which aims to provide support for students and their families who face significant challenges such as hunger, homelessness, clothing and transportation, the digital divide, as well as textbooks and other learning tools.
Government Service and Awards


Armond served the people of California as a Senior Consultant for the CA State Assembly Speaker’s Office of Member Services and as a Senior Representative for the former CA State Assembly Majority Leader, Dario Frommer.

Dr. Armond Aghakhanian is the 2010 recipient of President Barack Obama’s Volunteer Service Award Presented to him by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, the 2003 Character & Ethics Project Award, the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry Volunteer of the Year Award, the LA Coalition to End Hunger & Homelessness Volunteer Award, and the YMCA Service Award, as well as many other honors and accolades.

Dr. Aghakhanian received his:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from California State University Northridge,
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from Woodbury University
  • Doctorate from Pepperdine University.


I received my Doctorate in Education from Pepperdine University & an MBA from Woodbury University. I currently live with my wife, Dr. Gayane Gasamanyan, and our eight-year-old son, Arameh.
